Audio - Improving Speakers

Next on my list is improving the quality of the Audio system.

At the moment I've got the standard Blaupunkt GTX 542 speakers 90w/30w 4 Ohms mounted in wooden bulkhead pods.

The sound is ok but very tinny and little bass so time to improve.

Better more powerful speakers is one option but I was thinking of also either making the pods deeper or putting air holes into the sides of the pods.

Do you think this would improve the bass or is new speakers the only option?

suggestions welcome

thanks

Interested in this thread as I only have crapy computer speakers at the moment, linked to a car stereo.
So would like to know what you guys have fitted for a nice quality audio system?
Doesn't have to be, shake the boat to pieces bass, just a nice quality sound, to be used in appropriate situations! I.e. not annoying my anchored neighbors!

I think that to give reasonable bass, the speaker needs to be open at the back.  If yours are bulkhead mounted, you presumably can't cut holes behind them, so you might try cutting holes in the pods and seeing whether you get an improvement.

In many boats, the speakers are fitted in the locker sides under the seats, so there's lots of volume behind them.

Go to a car audio shop and buy an active sub-woofer. Works wonders.
