Mandatory day-time reading when I'm wide awake, as far as I'm concerned. This is an excellent site, Odysseus. Thanks for posting...

Interesting that he recommends using butyl tape for bedding rail stanchion bases. Today is the first time I've seen such recommendation, but two years back I rebedded all of my deck stanchions and decided to use butyl tape because I already had some, given to me by my father some twenty odd years ago, and it's worked a treat. No stanchion base water leaks since using the stuff, so I'm sold on using it for any external areas that need such sealing.

Great point about battery orientation in boats: https://marinehowto.com/installation-orientation-of-flooded-batteries-on-boats/

Not sure about butyl bedding. I've used it a lot during our 2015 refit, and while it does indeed not leak anywhere, it does keep squeezing out forever and attracts dirt and generally looks very messy now. I've cleaned up some and edged it with conventional sealant instead.

As for conventional sealant, the prevalent Sikaflex 291 (PU based) I would also not recommended. It suffers really bad now that we're in high UV areas, some of it chalking off after just one year. The more modern MS polymer based sealant I've tried a tube of (Sabatack) is far superior so far, so I'll be getting more of that for future jobs.
