Really a stupid question!
Where the he.. is the battery charger located? I have searched the mid cabin and the engine room, but I can't find anything that resembles a charger.

Are you sure it has a battery charger? Normally boats of that age had chargers that used cooling fans and wired to operate as soon as the 220V is plugged in - that is there is no separate switch. The fan is noisy so you should be able to trace it. Alternatively trace the cables from the 220V panel or from the batteries. If the charger was a factory fit then its location will be shown in the owners handbook.
