Help , I provided my hull number to SVB ( Bavaria 36 2003 ) and they came back with a 68mm inner diameter bearing

Yet when I measure the rudder stock above the gland it's a 60mm shaft

I've never had the rudder off and the delay means I need to preorder the bearing

Is the shaft a different diameter at the lower bearing ?

Thanks

Dave

Bonjour,

Yes the rudder stock should be of a larger diameter at the lower bearing place. I just done bearings replacement on my bavaria 42 cruiser from 2008. The new lower bearing has a 68mm inner diameter.  I am quite surprised that the same diameter is used for the 36 !! Industrial / purchasing process optimisation ?!

Is that a crack on your rudder shaft, midway between the bearings?

For what it may be worth, at the end of 2011, having had my B36(2002) for a year, I had the yard change the rudder bearings, and I asked them to keep the old ones to show me when I returned a few weeks later. I kept those old bearings, I dont remember why, but I found them again in my garage a day or two ago. I didnt know or hadnt realised there was a step in the diameter of the rudder post until seeing the photo in one of the postings above, and so I have just been down to measure the old bearings.

The small bearing had the following dimensions:-
Internal Diameter  ............................40mm
Outside Diameter  ............................64.9mm
Height  ............................................40mm

The large bearing  had the following dimensions:-
Internal Diameter   ..........................67.9 - 68.0mm at one end
and ................................................68.1 - 68.2mm at the other end
Outside Diameter .............................97.9mm
Height ............................................60.3mm

Thanks

So I can calm down and order the 68mm Roller bearing From jefa ( at half the price of SVB !!!)

I have to fit a tiller arm as I'm dumping the wheel pilot. So that's at the 60mm part
