Hi

We are seeking advice regarding the installation of a new D1-30 with sail drive.
They are to replace a MD2020 and sail drive on a 2004 B32.
We have decided to take advantage of the engine change and up the power.

Will the new engine fit on the bearers or will we need to modify the engine mounts?

Are there any other modifications that need to be considered?

Having spoken to a couple of Volvo agents, one has suggested that we could go for a fixed 3 bladed propeller, 16 x 11.
Is this a good match with the new engine, etc.?

Any advice or recommendations much appreciated.

Really don't need a 3 blade (nor really a D1 30!). Your boat only displaces 3750kgs and a 20 is more than enough. My later 33 displaces 5500kgs (nearly 2 tons more!) and I find the D1 30 option a bit ott. It came with a 16*13 2 blade fixed although I have fitted a 16*11 2 blade FlexoFold.

Personally I would stick with a D1 20 which pretty sure will fit straight in and spend the money saved on a better propeller such as a feathering Featherstream. You will exceed hull speed even with the standard fixed 2 blade which I think is a 15*11.

I agree with Symphony on this.  Putting an engine in which is too powerful usually results in the engine not being worked hard enough.  It doesn't get hot enough to burn cleanly and you end up with everything getting coked-up and gummed-up, and you are also likely to get less hours out of it due to increased wear.

I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but diesel engines need to be run hot and worked hard.

Go for a D1-20 with a 2-blade prop.

Symphony 2 and IslandAlchemy, thanks for your replies.

As suggested we have decided to go for the D1-20.

Our current propeller is 15*11 on an MD2020 and it is spot on.

Thanks again

Very good. Although the reduction ratio is lower the maximum revs is lower so the shaft speed is the same and you can use the same propeller. You will find cruising is at lower revs around 2200 rather than 2400 with the 2020. Probably the best bit about the D1 is the much better self regulating alternator which speeds up charging, particularly if you have a big house bank.

Our propeller is not even a year old so that's good that we can fit it to the D1-20.
As always, very useful info and advice.
Thanks

Hi Will a rope cutter originally fitted by Clipper marine in 2003 on a 120 S drive fit a 130 S drive please?

symphony2

No. The fixed cutter needs to be changed as the locating peg is in a different place on the 130 housing. You can buy it as a separate item.
