Sea Water Pump, Bavaria 37 (2006) - Water Leak

I have a raw water leak from inside the sea water pump housing and have water dripping out of the back of the pump. Looking at the schematic for the sea water pump there is a sealing ring (part number 833996) which is the last item of the shaft components and which I assume must be intended to seal the shaft. This seal appears to have failed.

Has anyone had experience in replacing this sealing ring and can it be done with the pump/shaft in place?

Hi Dawntreader, last time I had this was on a Challenger, same symptoms which resulted in fitting a new pump, at first we thought it was the gasket leaking on the impeller plate. Eventually en route to Las Palmas the pump failed to move any water as the rear seal was letting in so much air, hence the new one fitted.

Aquilla: thanks for your comments too - I am seeing water through the weephole (pic attached) so will try a water seal replacement before taking out a second mortgage

It is very easy to prise out the old seal with pump in situ, have just done it. if you have problems PM me.

As I already had the lower steps removed, access to the pump was easy and, as you said, the seal is easily removed. Job done

Make sure that the replacement seal has a stainless steel spring.

It was a genuine Volvo part, #833996, ordered from a reputable dealer and no metal parts visible. There is no separate spring shown on the component parts for the raw water pump and none was removed - I just eased the old seal out and pushed the new one home.

Very impressive, I assume once you took the impeller out you could see the seal and hook out with some ease?

The seal is on the shaft and lies directly behind the impellor. It is flush with the rear surface of the pump housing. I used a small, flat-headed screwdriver and was able to gently ease it forward along the shaft and out of the recess. With the steps in place this will still be possible but expect it to be harder to achieve.
