Title: How to? Compass
Post by: solar on August 25 2015, 11:24
Hi,
Tried to re bed my comp today.
2 long bolts came out easy but it won't come off like something else is holding it down?
Anyone did this ? before I'll break something?
Thanks!

There were four screws holding my binnacle compass down but once removed came off easily

My Plastimo Olympic has two exposed screws at the rear, and two more at the front concealed under pop-out plastic bits.

Mine is a Plastimo Olympic 135 but no concealed screws or hidden pop out bits that I can see?
Only 2 at  the rear.

There are 2 plastic sections with printing on them.  They're the grey ones in this photo.  They remove, and there's a screw under each one.

Please don't say your compass isn't white...

....and whilst you have it out and apart you may want to consider replacing the bulbs for LEDs

Whenever I mess with the binnacle electronics or try to calibrate the helm compass, it's always a bit of a headache trying to make sure the deviation is properly sorted out.
I usually end up pulling out my phone to double-check things against an online layout. I've been using https://123compass.org/ (https://123compass.org/) lately because it has a clean web compass and a calibration test that works straight from the browser without having to download a clunky app while out on the water. Worth having in the bookmarks if you're trying to quickly verify your heading or troubleshoot magnetic interference nearby.
