Title: Cruiser 37 Chainplate cover
Post by: Asylum2.0 on May 03 2017, 13:20
Hello all,

I have a 2014 Cruiser 37 and have noticed some colored water weeping out of the chainplate covers along the toerail.

Does anyone know how to remove the covers to inspect the chainplate fittings?

Thanks

Ed

It is more likely to be 'rusty' water coming off the rigging. The chainplate covers are normally water-tight.

Just to clarify, do you mean the stainless plate around the chainplate, or the fibreglass cover below the toerail?

Fiberglass cover

Fiberglass cover

OK, yes, water will leak out of that - it isn't watertight as dawntreader claimed.  Indeed, it's surely preferable that water can drain out of the area.  I imagine the cover is simply glued on with sealant.  The chainplate is attached to the hull moulding with 8 meaty stainless nuts and bolts, and it's possible that slight surface rust is responsible for the coloured water you've seen.

The colored water has a greenish tint to it.  I'm thinking pollen as the whole boat washes geeen in the spring.
I've tried to flush it clean but not to my satisfaction.

Rather than taking off the fibreglass side cover, you might try lifting the stainless plate on the deck and using a bottle brush to clean inside the cavity.

Thanks Tiger,

I see the stainless plate is fastened by two small phillips head screws.  It also seems to be tucked under the toe rail.
Do I need to release the toe rail screws to slide the plate out?

Sorry, I don't know the answer, maybe trial and error...

Did you ever found out how to clean behind the chainplate covers?

No luck.
I powerwashed the boat and flushed it clean.
No staining yet.
Would still like the get in there to inspect.
