Title: Cockpit Locker size on Bav40 2002 - please Help
Post by: p_schurli on May 12 2018, 20:19
Does anybody know the size of the cockpit lockers as well as the size of the opening on a 3 cabin Bav40 (mine is from 2002)? I have bought a Diving compressor which I want to store in the locker. Thanks a lot!

If you can wait a couple of days, I can provide you with some measurements. I am planning to visit our boat on Monday afternoon.

Monday is wonderful. Thank you! The compressor is 76x34x42cm (LxWxH). Weight is 42kg, so I do not want to carry it through the whole boat.

Both port and starboard lockers looked identical, so I measured only the starboard side.

The locker opening is 61x51 while the height of the locker is about 37cm. See photos for details.

To me it looks like you could fit the compressor in the same direction as I demonstrated my companionway washboard measuring 57x87 if you just could somehow reduce the height of the unit. Any removable height-adjusting legs? Rotating the compressor so that W<->H is not on option due to oil sump?

The distance from "rear slope" (nuts on last pic) of the locker to front edge was bang-on 76cm, so this dimension should fit.

Tommi

Hello Tommi,
now I also think there will be a way to stow it away. One side of the compressor (where the 4-stroke engine sits) is lower. This should go under the lid. The legs are rubber and extend 2cm under the bottom plate. I also contacted the manufacturer if I can rotate the compressor.
Thanks for your help and happy sailing!
Peter

I am on the boat for one week now and the diving compressor fits into the locker perfectly. I think I can also run it inside.

Hi Peter,
If you're refilling diving cylinders with the compressor in the locker, how do you prevent the tanks being filled with exhaust fumes?
Cheers

Hi Mark!
I have to remove the compressor and place it in the cockpit. The compressor has a snorkel which gets air from about 1m above. When you fill at anchor it will probably always get fresh air.

A lifetime ago while on merchant ships we had a long hose attached to the air inlet for the compressor used for recharging our SCBA air cylinders. The compressor was fixed down and couldn't be moved, but the end of the inlet air hose could be taken to an area well away from any possible engine room, exhaust or otherwise noxious fumes. It worked for us !!
