Post by: Nicolas235 on July 02 2018, 18:55
My sailbrive has developped a clunking sound when the boat is listing to starboard I have 1500 hres on it. Anybody else has experienced this issue?

Hop in and have a look? The most likely cause for clunking sounds is something around the propeller, or something wrong with the propeller itself. Best to do it before it causes more damage.

Prop is a fixed 3 blades standard unit that came with the boat. I got it clean from a shells an growth. It has large paint patches that missing. It run without genareting any noticeable vibrations.

That clunking is not heard when I run the motor at say 2000 rpm staying in neutral. So it is for sure after the motor between the transmission and the prop.

Could it be a bad bearing in the saildrive?

Highly unlikely to be anything inside the saildrive. The propeller has a rubber bush between the splines and the metal part and the bond between these two can break down. Little is visible from the outside, but that would be the first thing to cheak. Leave the drive in gear and see if you can turn the blades. The other thing it could be is a loose anode. The screws holding it on to the mounting plate must be tight, or it could be that it is worn and moving around the screws.

What side does your exhaust water exit? Could it be the exhaust line surging against hull on that tack?
