Title: Bav 39 keel bolts
Post by: Ziffius on May 04 2013, 11:46
Hi, I am looking at a few bav 39's hoping to buy one but inspecting the keel bolts has me a bit concerned. One with a deep lead keel has one bolt at front and one at rear showing marked rust at the nut/washer interface whereas as all the other bolts are pristine. Other bav 39s I have looked at have a mix of deterioration but noticeable is the surplus sealant protruding from around the washer except on the one with the lead keel.
The hull/keel joint looks ok. Anyone have experience of keel bolt problems? Pics are of some of the bolts on the lead keel

Don't think Bavaria keels are lead - they're cast iron - leastways, that's what I've found when removing rust and old paint from mine!  I don't think you've got anything to worry about with the bolts you show; the rust could simply be the result of getting water into the bilges at some point.  However, a surveyor would be able to put your mind at rest or suggest what remidial action is required before buying the boat.

It was possible to get lead keel as option...

"Lead keel with antimony as deep keel. (Draught appx. 2,00 m)
2801,72 ?"

Yes, lead keel was an upgrade option, and a good one at that.

Someway in your photos it look like..
Maybe once there have been some sealant but not anymore ?
Could it be possible. Keel is reinstalled ? One reason or another.

Attached some pics.
Our B39 with standard cast iron keel.
I think that yellow sealant under the washers is not sealant at all.
It looks more like some kind of clue.
Very hard. More like epoxy than flexible sealant like sikaflex.

Thanks for replies, had surveyor check them and he was reasonably happy with them but advised to clean them up and monitor. Went ahead and bought the boat and have hit major problem trying to fit an autopilot - that's in another post!(//)
