Title: Saildrive gear while sailing
Post by: Alphadug on November 08 2021, 23:44
This topic is probably covered already, sorry. While sailing my V42 with the 130S saildrive and a 3 blade folding prop should I stick it in reverse? Can't really see a reason to.

Thanks, Doug

Folding props should have the gearbox in reverse when sailing.  Yes, we've covered this before, but it's still good advice.  Putting the gearbox in reverse ensures the prop will not spin and the blades will properly fold.  Problems usually happen when a folding prop gets so fouled that it starts acting like a fix prop and will begin to spin because the blades are unable to fold correctly.

In addition to that it is not good for the gearbox to be freewheeling continuously.
