Some of my opening Portlights in the side of the coach roof are leaking and I want to replace the seals.
Intriguingly there are 2 different reference numbers embossed on the glass.
2 x Ref 124 02C6
4 x Ref 124 03C6
They all appear to be the same size. Does anyone know what the ref numbers mean?
They look more like production codes to me.
I emailed Seals Direct, sales@sealsplusdirect.co.uk, who sent me a spread sheet for the Lewmar New Portlight Seals.
From this I was able to identify mine as Bavaria Barrel Portlights, so good progress.
The quote from Seals Direct was a bit of a shock -£56 +vat each!
My advice is that before changing the seals you should be absolutely sure that the seal between the acrylic and the frame is the source of the leak.
In my case the source of most of the leaks were the seal between the inner and outer frame.
When the source was the seal between the acrylic and the frame this was caused not because the seal was in bad conditions like because there was a gap between the acrylic and the seal, for example because the acrylic was curved. In those cases I put a piece of electrical tape (folded in half over itself) between the seal and the frame so is hidden
Ouch! Sounds expensive for a short piece of extruded sealing rubber. Have you tried wiping them with some warm soapy water? Occasionally my aft cabin ones spring a tiny leak and I find that a little attention sorts that problem, unless yours have hardened and cracked, but I very much doubt they have taken more punishment than mine in our relentless summer sun!
Lazy Pelican has been in the Med since 2010. 3 of the seals are cracked. It's only the aft cabin Portlights which never get opened that aren't suspect.
The price quoted is Lewmar RRP. I have found a cheaper source, but still a crazy price.
I purchased several metres of lewmar window seals from eagle boat windows, their prices at the time were a fraction of what has been quoted above.
On my 2007 Bavaria 50 Cruiser, several opening portlights drip a bit of water.
I notice that when closed dirt accumulates along the lower edge where the acrylic meets the seal.
When the portlight is opened and closed, I am assuming this dirt gets onto the seal and is the cause of drips later.
Has anyone else had this experience? The seals seem intact and flexible.
Hi Allen,
Yes same problem with dirt causing the seal to leak. Wipe with a soft cloth and ll good. Also use a smear of petroleum jelly once a year to keep them soft.
