Title: Folding propellor
Post by: John G on December 25 2023, 12:34
I am considering buying a folding propellor for my 2006 Bavaria 30 cruiser. 2 blade or 3 blade. Does anybody have any comments or advice please .

Flexofold 2 blade probably a 15*10 or 11 but be guided by Flexofold recommendation. In the UK would suggest talking to Darglow Engineering but guess there is an agent in Spain or deal direct with the factory in Denmark. I had one on both my 37 and later 33 and both wer excellent.

I fitted a kiwiprop 5 years ago. It is a feathering propeller, quite good, a 20% increase in sailing performance as any folding or feathering propeller would do.  I particularly like the ability to manually adjust pitch for individual tuning to the boat.  However, I have just had a second propeller overhaul bill from the importers of 300 pounds in 5 years.  They say work was needed as I missed an internal grease point , but I really felt I had completed their greasing routine??  So yes- the kiwiprop is good, follow their recommendations on greasing , also their recommendation on propeller blade size, and pitch setting.  But there is the occasional overhaul bill.  This was manifested by a developing poor performance in astern position.

I have a Flexofold on my Bav44.  Love it.  Low or no maintenance.  The three blade is very smooth.  I've had two bladed Martec props before on other boats.  Very low drag, but some vibration at times, but not often.  A gear prop like the FlexoFold is better.  For you size boat you could do the 2 or 3 blade version.  The 3 bladed version will be a bit smoother and probably bite better in the water.

I agree with Symphony. On a 30, I would also go for a 2-blade Flexofold.
