Title: Cockpit teak sealant
Post by: N44rag on April 20 2024, 12:47
Hi all

I understand Bavaria may have used different sealants for the cockpit teak when they made my B31 (2000), one type for caulking the  joints and a different type for around the perimeter.

Like many I am experiencing the perimeter sealant degrading and creating black marks when washed - nightmare.

I've bitten the bullet and started remove all the sealant and wondered if anyone can give me some advice on whether it is necessary to use two different sealants again when renewing.

I will probably go for the Sikaflex 290 DC but am concerned now that this may not be OK for the perimeter.

Many thanks.

No, you can use the same everywhere. It's just that the deck is prefab, so the sealant used at the teak deck manufacturer's workshop was different (superior) to what Bavaria used when they glued it onto the boat.

Thanks for your help and explaining why it came to be that two different types of sealant were used.

Whilst it's a sod of a job to replace it, it will be worth it in the end, I'm sure.
