It's become impossible for me to change the oil filter on my engine. The location is unbelievably awkward slanting between sump and crank pulley. The answer has to be a remote filter. Has anyone fitted one to this engine. Where did you get it . How easy to fit?
Something like this?
https://fybmarine.shop/volvo-penta-remote-oil-filter-kit-for-volvo-penta-diesel-yacht-engines
They seem to exist, even with a VP part number: https://www.volvopenta.com/shop/0/part-sections/54142909 and https://marinepartseurope.com/en/dealer/haisma/category/marine%20gasoline%20engines/product/5.7gsiplke/explodedview/54142909?catalog=7797410&functiongroup=Lubricating%20system&img=52683.png&header=Remote%20Oil%20Filter
Perhaps contact your VP dealership near you for the modification, price and availability/ alternative?
Thanks for the info. I will follow up when I get back to UK. Perhaps the fitting is the same as theD2. My engine has been out of production for 20 years so vp accessories very much reduced
You can also check for Perkins Prima ones, the bolts on the block should be the same although the filter fitting is not.
In addition, there are generic kits, you basically just need to match the central thread and the diameter of the outer seal, so if you can get some measurements you should be able to look up a suitable one.
I can measure the diameter of the filter but how do I measure the thread. I assume metric maybe 16 mm
So get a 16 mm bolt and see if it threads into your spare oil filter! :)
Although oil filters often have weirdo UNC threads.
Is this your filter (there's two types depending on exact engine model)? The thread spec is on the photos: https://www.svb24.com/product/510505
It looks similar. Unfortunately I don't have a spare but I tried measuring the oily old one. The thread may not be metric as the vernier caliper showed it to be 17 mm. I don't have a bolt that size to test it. I have the make a reference so can follow that up. The way to remove the filter as it's now positioned is to apply flat screwdriver to the inner rim and hammer to induce a turning moment. No space for banging through just keep taping on the side. Makes quite a kink. Have photo but don't see how to attach
Brand is Mahle OC 204 with a 3/4 inch thread
So not metric. Will be looking for replacement here in Tunisia
That's 3/4"-16 UNF, very common. First one I found: https://www.obpltd.com/product-page/remote-billet-oil-filter-housing-3-4-16-unf-centre/
Fits a very wide range of diameters on the flange. Then you just need some hoses and a new filter mount (doesn't have to be the same filter type).
The above one seems on the pricey side to me, so I'd look some more, including AliExpress. Which might also ship to Tunisia easier than EU/UK suppliers.
