Title: Volvo penta turbocharger maintainance question
Post by: elias on December 03 2025, 11:55
Hi , my technician suggests checking . The engine is d2 75 , on a Bavaria 50 2007. Speed 8 knots at 2.100 revs calm waters . It looks that has deposits , do you think that it could ask for a new one? Are there any signs of imminent failure I can see ?

To check your turbo, after warming the engine up, go full throttle (i know this hurts!), you should reach approx. 2800 -3000 rpm and a far higher speed (depends on fouling state of your hull and propeller dimension). Check if your waste gate opens (the small lever on the turbo). If so, everything is fine. You should run your engine at high loads from time to time to prevent buildups in the turbo...

Elias,
These turbos have a habit of fouling up when driven conservatively like most of us do.
I wrote an article on my seized turbo here https://www.bavariayacht.org/forum/index.php/topic,4303.msg27305.html#msg27305
From my experience i would caution on running at wide open throttle before you prove that he waste gate is not seized. It can run at higher than design inlet pressure if the waste gate is seized shut. Not such a problem if it is seized open.
I fitted a manual pressure gauge in the engine bay. I check to see if it has pressure whilst under way. I then push it to just over 2,000rpm to see if the pressure stops rising. It should increase up to 8.7psi at 2,000rpm and then stay at that pressure up to full revs as the waste gate controls pressure.
The data sheet with turbo pressure can be downloaded from this site.  https://www.bavariayacht.org/forum/index.php/topic,1541.msg26905.html#msg26905
