Title: Water ingress Bavaria 38
Post by: Nigel M on May 20 2026, 14:21
I have a 2008 Bavaria 38, when it rains I have water at the bottom of the main cabin bulkhead. I thought it was entering the mast wiring glands, however have had replaced and no visual indication of leaking. Now thinking water is entering the boxed mast step section.

Has anyone any advise or suggestions.

Hi Nigel,

The mast is stepped on the body and not going through, estimate chances are slight you have a leakage overthere. (Unless the sealant between the foundation has given up and attachment screws are leaking through) It could be one of your hatches is leaking and water is running between the outer and innershell forward to the bulkhead and then drops down. Did you already have a look at that? That seems a more likely scenario to me, not knowing the Bav38. Perhaps owner of your type of boat have specific things to watch for or found model related leakages?

Hi Happy Sailor

Thanks for your suggestions.
Don't think it could be the mast step bolts due to the high volume of water coming through.

Re water coming from the hatch between inner and outer fiberglass shell. Again a lot of water is ending up in the bilge and no water appears to be running down bulkhead. Forgot to mention port wardrobe is wet, maybe water is coming in through wardrobe and pooling at bottom of bulkhead on starboard side.

If it is a lot of water, which is not condensation, then all hull penetrations are suspect.. footrails, chainplate, cable conduits,... with really a lot of water during rain the leakage should also be visible and usually there will be traces as well.. tough job with thorough searching.. I hope other similar boat owners can direct you further to specific suspects!
