Title: Mast Shroud Anchor Plate - Water Ingress
Post by: dawntreader on December 09 2013, 10:22
I have water coming in through the deck mast shroud anchor plate into the small storage cupboards in the cabin. I intend to take this fitting apart and apply silicon sealant under the plate and into the 4 locking bolts. Has anyone else done this and is there anything I should know?

I cannot find any schematics for this fitting so am not 100% sure of how it is put together. However, I intend to loosen the tension on both shrouds and undo the 4 bolts which appear to hold it to the anchor bar. I hope it is then just a case of lifting the anchor plate, cleaning and re-sealing before re-assembly.

Wouldn't it be easier to just take one bolt out at a time, apply gob, and refit.

Then you won't need to let the shroud off.

Until I know what is under the plate I couldn't comment. However, the water may be getting in between the plate and deck as well as through the bolt holes, otherwise I agree with you  :D

The water will be coming through the bolt holes, as suggested remove one at a time and seal/ tighten. If its corroded/pitted the bolts then replace, well worth close inspection.

Ok, thanks to you both for that advice. I will do as you suggest.

I used Capt Tolley's leak fluid with great success on these fittings

I have some of that product so that will be my first try then.

However, if it is only the bolts leaking I am now concerned about the amount of water I am seeing and that the bolts may not be significantly contributing to this ingress. I am beginning to suspect that the water may be running along the inner skin and leaking behind the cupboard which is a different nightmare  :sick as finding the source will be that more difficult.

As you say, the water could be coming in somewhere else and running down the coachroof.

You'll see when you get the internals out, but most common/obvious places to check are:-

Windows - the foam gaskets go hard and crumbly and you can get water leaking in behind the window (most of mine did this). Cure it by removing the window frame, cleaning off the old foam, and re-seating using Abromast Butyl sealant.

Genoa track - if you have bolt leaks here, try Capt. Tolleys.

Get someone to put a hosepipe on the boat while you're inside. You'll soon see where its coming from.

Best of luck

Bob

Bob, thanks for the advice. Will have to strip her down a bit more and then do the hose bit again as she wouldn't leak last time I tried that trick  >:(.   I did have some success with Capt. Tolley on the portlight but will now look to the overhead ones too now that she's out.
Regards, Jim.

I had same issue...I retracted each bold about 1cm (one at a time) and applied a blob of silicone to the thread and screwed it back tight.  Problem solved (that was 4 years ago).  I believe the water actually finds its way down the threads.

Anyone know the correct torque for these bolts?
