To check your turbo, after warming the engine up, go full throttle (i know this hurts!), you should reach approx. 2800 -3000 rpm and a far higher speed (depends on fouling state of your hull and propeller dimension). Check if your waste gate opens (the small lever on the turbo). If so, everything is fine. You should run your engine at high loads from time to time to prevent buildups in the turbo...

Hi , my technician suggests checking . The engine is d2 75 , on a Bavaria 50 2007. Speed 8 knots at 2.100 revs calm waters . It looks that has deposits , do you think that it could ask for a new one? Are there any signs of imminent failure I can see ?

I have noticed this on my Vision 42 over the last year. The boat is ready to flip flop at anchor or on a mooring in any kind of wind. Above 20 knots gets a bit lively.

I am experimenting with using a small sea anchor - a cheap 32" Amazon job. This is slung directly under the bow by using an alpine butterfly knot in the middle of a mooring rope, and attached tight to both bow cleats.

The idea is that. along with having more windage forward, the boat design (like most modern boats) has a very shallow foot at the bow, thereby offering no resistance to sideways movement. Therefore the system (boat and anchor chain / rode) acts like an undampened spring, oscillating back and forth when energy (wind) is input.

The sea anchor adds damping to this system by resisting the sideways movement of the bow.

So far, I have only been able to test it once, in 15 knots on a mooring. It did seem to tame the movement. I suspect a larger sea anchor would be better, especially in strong winds.

Regarding the attachment method, the sea anchor is kept shallow, only about a meter below the surface. The point of having it slung under the bow is to remove as much 'play' in the system as possible, so the sea anchor can act fast, without a lot of slack to take up when changing direction.

The main problem I foresee is the rope will abrade the anti-fowling paint, which is not ideal. Some kind of protective rubber pad may be used. I am thinking that in an ideal situation, a strong eye attached to the bow near the waterline would be ideal, and could also be used for the snubber, giving a better angle for the anchor chain. However, that is some involved engineering I don't want to do right now.

Yup, they have more wall thickness. It's not been an issue and we ran both the engine and the watermaker off that same seacock, occasionally at the same time :) That's with the 50 HP MD22L-B.

Interesting thread!

When I asked the boatyard to replace the seacock of the saildrive with a Truedesign they told me that it was not a good idea because the inside diameter of the plastic fittings are smaller than the metal ones.

I believed in their explanation so I haven't checked if it's true.

Did anyone have that curiosity?

Thank you for the vivid description, I'm sure you had fun with it. My seacock is completely Stuck, but nothing is leaking at the moment. So hopefully a job for the next haulout.

Jigsaw metal blade held with fingers/pliers and a lot of swearing. Once you've cut through the threads, the pressure is released and it screwed out by applying some rotational force in the newly cut slot.

For additional excitement, we had to do this with the boat in the water and the saildrive blocked from the outside by freediving and applying some scavenged supermarket materials (plastic broom with bristles torn out and cut in half), zip-ties and butyl sealant and a whittled down foam wine cork to the water intake holes on the outside of the saildrive leg. Don't forget the one in front!

It was mid Covid lockdown when the thing started to leak and both boatyard and chandlery were shut down for good so I had to get inventive and brave the murky marina waters.

I'd also thoughtfully stuck a hose with a small 12V pump down the leg to pump out any water still seeping into the leg, but of course I not so thoughtfully forgot to add a filter and so the pump failed mid operation. The swearing got extremely colourful at that point, but it all worked out in the end and I fitted a temporary brass piece until we could haul out after the lockdown and do the job properly, with the above mention Tru-Design :)

I'm curious how you removed the broken stump from your SD?

So am I now this thread has come to my attention
