Bavaria 320 sportline

Hi,
Currently in the process of upgrading to a 1991/2 -  320 sportline. 
Anything to look out for?  And does anyone know the air draft?

Mines ten years younger than yours, and my deck glands are all leaky as hell, so I would check those :)

Good example of not trusting broker's information as none of the dimensions they give agree with those on sailboatdata for this model.

Typically masts are at least as long as the boat and in this case sailboatdata gives P (mainsail hoist) as 11.51m so the mast is probably 12m (boat LOA 10.19m). Add the distance from mast step to WL of 1.5-2m and add 50cm for masthead fittings like antenna you get air draft around 14m. For comparison my slightly larger 33 has a quoted air draft (handbook) of 14.58m without masthead additions.

 Thanks, I agree with the misleading brokerage. They had the graft listed as 1.37m copied from sail boat data when the  actual.dradt is 1.65 surely they would notice the difference!
Survey been carried out next week so hopefully he doesn't pick up too many bits.

It is common for Bavarias to have optional keels, deep and shallow. Boats of this age were generally poorly documented and there are often errors in what third party information that has survived from the period. It gets perpetuated by brokers and owners "lifting" from earlier sources.

As you probably know, Bavarias like the one you are looking at are only superficially similar to the later more common type designed by J&J. They were also built in a more traditional and expensive manner with more detailed wood interiors for example. They were expensive at the time compared with French boats so relatively few were sold in the UK. The trick that Bavaria performed was keeping the look but stripping out the time consuming labour through mechanisation and simplifying interior fitout with modules built outside the boat. However they kept the same types of hardware and overall both types have proved durable.
