The air filter of my D2 made its goodbye and when I saw the price asked for this new piece of cylindric foam I really questioned whether I should start my own air filter business: €70 !? Are they nuts?
It's this part: https://www.svb.de/de/volvo-penta-luftfiltereinsatz-fuer-d2-50-55-60-75-md2020-md2040.html

Is there a proven alternative to this insanity?

If you can't find one in the right dimensions, buy some sheet foam, cut and glue it like so:

Or just zip-tie a piece of old t-shirt around the thing. It's not like there's a lot of stuff to filter in the air of an enclosed engine room.

Agreed. Plan B was to go buy some filter foam and McGyver it onto the spring holding the thing in place and done.
How can they dare to ask for such a ridiculous price?  :-*

About 10 years ago I replaced the air filter on my D2-55 with a K&N (cleanable) filter for about Euro10-15.
Never had any problems with it and it never even got dirty!

Awesome idea. I saw these too. The ones as used on racing motor bikes?

I checked with my local motorcycle dealer and while they do have racing air filters, we could not find one with a diameter of 6cm.
But what they did have was air filter foam mats. They are €12 and from that I built my own. See images.
I have enough mat to build filters for the next 100 years! :-)

Thanks for everyone's inspiration!

That's what I was looking for in the motorcycle shop but the diameters were too small.
I would totally go for that part! Good choice!
