HI  All,

Its time for a new windlass for my 1999  Ocean 38 .
The Lewmar Pro series on the boat is not powerful enough and i want to  consider other options.
What are you using for this size boat?

Lazy Pelican

On our B39 we changed the original Lewmar Pro1000 for a Lofrans Cayman- brilliant piece of kit!

On Bavaria 40 2001 (aft cockpit - not Ocean) the original windlass is Lofrans Cayman - has been so far powerful enough.

Base on so close vintage, I believe Cayman should fit, but for sure you need to double-check the dimensions for fit.

It would appear that the Lofrans Cayman will not fit on the recessed windlass 'platform'(?) above the anchor well as i only have 21cm of depth available and the Cayman is 23cm high.

A lot of Bavaria's on charter have their windlass raised to deck level as the angle of the chain is poor when the windless is in the recess. I raised mine by as much as I could with a piece of Oak. If I had my time again I would have it at deck level so avoiding the chain jumping off the gypsy.

Our 40 Ocean has a Cayman (88 I think) and that does the job without complaint, even in iffy conditions. Just be sure you modify the rubber "moat" that comes with it to avoid a gap where water becomes trapped along the aluminium base, which leads to significant corrosion problems. Either cut the moat or fill the gap with sealant.

Agree that the angle round the gypsy could be a bit better - some people here made mods for that.
