When replacing the sail drive oil I found a square piece of metal . Will I need to remove the sail drive and bring it in for repair and will it be expensive.

How big? Got a picture?

Not too big maybe the size of a small washer

Nigel

Doesn't really help, "a small washer" can be 1mm or 10mm depending on your point of view. My reaction would be to leave it (it could be a rogue bit of casing, for example) but check for further problems.

Was it stuck to the magnet on the drain plug?

Yes it was stuck on the magnet -- I may be able to get a picture -- we put a lot of hours on the engine last summer we did over 500 hours traveling to Maine . I have a flexofold prop I worry that it may put strain on the drive. Removing the drive looks simple enough have no clue what it looks like inside .

If it was stuck on the magnet, it's ferrous. Not so good :(

Agree with Nigel... if it is ferrous and of a regular shape, it is probably part of the inner construction - maybe a thrust washer or locking washer - either way requiring additional investigation to get the peace of mind that we all need when we need to navigate with our engines running.
